Originally known as the Town of Berlin between the years of 1854 and 1912 and then changed to the City of Berlin from 1912 to 1916, Kitchener is a city in southwestern Ontario. With a population of 451,235 (2006), it is considered the eleventh largest Census Metropolitan Area. It is surrounded by Cambridge and Waterloo. Kitchener and Waterloo are often referred to the twin cities and with the addition of Cambridge, it is often included in the group of “tri-cities”.. Because of the german heritage of the early settlers, Kitchener has become famous for it’s annual Oktoberfest celebration. It has been billed as Canada’s Great Bavarian Festival and lasts for 9 days. Part of this celebration also includes the popular Miss Oktoberfest pageant and the Oktoberfest parade. One of the more popular Mennonite families to have lived in Kitchener are the Schneiders, whose restored home from 1816 is now a museum in the heart of the city.
