Oshawa has a population of 141,590 according to a 2006 census and is a city located along the Lake Ontario shore. The city got its name from the Ojibwa term aazhaway which means “crossing to the other side of a river or lake”. The location of the city was originally used as a transfer point for fur traders. Around 1760, the French built a trading post near the harbour location and was later abandoned. The ruins eventually provided shelter for residents which then became Oshawa.
