Peterborough is 125 km northeast of Toronto and is a city on the Otonabee River. As of a 2006 census, Peterborough has an approximate population of 74,898 people. Known as the gateway to the “cottage country” of the Kawarthas, Peterborough is a large recreational region located in the province. The “electric city”, the area was first inhabited by First Nations who followed retreating glaciers some 11000 years ago. Over time the city developed and saw extensive industrial growth. It was also one of the first places that began generating hydro electrical power, even before the plants located at Niagara Falls.
