Scarborough is the eastern part that makes up the city of Toronto. It used to be a separate city for over 200 years but since 1998 it has been part of the East District of Toronto. Scarborough was named by Elizabeth Simcoe after Scarborough North Yorkshire, England because the area reminded her of the limestone cliffs in Scarborough England. It was incorporated into a township in the year of 1850 and as a borough on January 1, 1967. Scarborough is surrounded by Victoria Park Avenue, Rouge River, Little Rouge Creek, Steeles Avenue and Lake Ontario on the south side. Scarborough was the inspiration behind Mike Myers’ character in Wayne World. Other Scarborough natives include Eric McCormack, John Candy, and the Barenaked Ladies music group. Jim Carrey also called Scarborough home during his teenage years.
